of 소유대명사

a friend of mine / a friend of yours (= one of your friends)

We say "(a friend) of mine/yours/his/hers/ours/theirs

=> of + 소유대명사 형태를 통해 자신의 친구 혹은 누군가의 어떤 이를 표현할 수 있습니다. 이때 of 뒤에 목적격이 와서는 안됩니다. (not a friend of me) 

ex) We took a trip with some friends of ours.

ex) Eric had an argument with a co-worker of his.

ex) It's always been an ambition of mine.

ex) My parents have gone away with some friends of theirs.

 

같은 방식으로 소유대명사 자리에 's 형태가 올 수 있습니다. 예문을 확인하시죠.

ex) That woman over there is a friend of my sister's.

소유격 own (목적어)

my own / your own ..., etc = something that is only mine/yours, not shared or borrowed.

=> 소유격 own 형태는 공유하거나 빌린 것이 아닌 온전한 자신의 것 혹은 누구의 것을 나타낼 때 사용합니다. 이때는 소유격 자리에 목적격 혹은 a/an이 오면 안 됩니다.not an own house) 

ex) On the test we had to read a story, and then write it in our own words.

ex) It's a shame that the apartment building doesn't have its own parking garage.

ex) She wants to start her own business.

 

여기서 [ on + 소유격 + own ] 형태로도 사용할 수 있는데 이때 해석은 독립적으로, 주체적으로(independently)라고 해석됩니다.

ex) I think my brothers are too young to make that decision on their own.

ex) I traveled around Japan on my own. (= not with an organized tour)

ex) I was scared. I didn't want to go out on my own.

by 재귀대명사

by myself / by yourself = "alone"

=> [by + 재귀대명사]는 "혼자서"라는 의미로 각각 인칭을 바라보면 됩니다. 예문을 통해 확인하시죠.

ex) I like living by myself.

ex) "Did you go to Korea by yourself?"  "No, with a friend"

ex) Student drivers are not allowed to drive by themselves.
