Sometimes we use a plural noun for one thing that has two parts.
=> 부분이 나누어진 하나의 사물을 가끔 복수 명사로 표현합니다. 특히 짝(pair)을 이루는 사물들이 이에 해당합니다.
- pants / jeans / tights / shorts / underpants (= two legs)
- pajamas (= top and bottom)
- glasses
- binoculars (= two lenses)
- scissors (= two knives)
ex) My pants are too long. (not my pants is)
ex) These scissors aren't very sharp.
ex) Those are nice jeans.
ex) I need some new glasses.
이렇게 짝을 이루는 사물에는 단수 표현을 "a pair of"를 붙여서 사용할 수 있습니다. 예문을 보시죠.
ex) That is a nice pair of jeans.
ex) I need a new pair of glasses.
-ics, -s로 끝나는 영단어의 단수 복수
-ics 끝나는 단어
Some nouns end in -ics, but are not usually plural.
=> -ics로 끝나는 단어는 보기에는 복수처럼 보이지만 단수입니다.

ex) Gymnastics is my favorite spot.
ex) Physics was my favorite subject in school.
단수 복수 같은 단어 -s
- means 단수 복수 => a means of transportation / many means of transportation
- series 단수 복수 => a TV series / two TV series
- species 단수 복수 => a species of fish / 200 species of fish
ex) The bicycle is a means of transportation.
ex) This plant is a very rare species.
person / people 단수 복수
We do not often use the plural of the "person" (like persons). We normally use "people" (a plural word)
=> 사람을 말할 때 한 명 즉, 단수이면 "person", 두 명 이상 즉, 복수이면 "people"을 씁니다.
ex) He's a kind person.
ex) I like Kim and Park. They're very nice people.
금액, 기간, 거리 = 단수
We think of a sum of money, a period of time, a distance, etc. as one thing. So we use a singular verb.
=> 돈, 시간, 거리를 하나 즉 단수로 생각하고 단수 형태의 동사를 씁니다. 예문을 확인하시죠.
ex) Ten dollars isn't enough money. We need more than that.
ex) Three years is a long time to be without a job.
ex) Two miles isn't very far to walk.
