관사 the를 쓰는 경우 vs 쓰지 않는 경우 예문으로 알아보기

지난 시간 관사 the를 쓰는 경우와 쓰지 않는 경우를 배워봤는데요. 오늘은 the가 붙는 경우와 the가 붙지 않는 경우에 따라 의미가 다른 경우에 대해 알아보겠습니다.

the 장소 school, class, church, and prison (or jail)

We use college, class, church, and prison (or jail) in a similar way. We do not use the when we are thinking of the general idea of these places and what they are used for.

=> 대학, 수업, 교회, 감독 등등 일반적인 상식 선에서 뜻하는 말이라고 한다면 the를 붙이지 않고 씁니다. 하지만 특정한 장소를 말한다고 하면 the를 쓰는 거죠. 말로는 어려울 수 있으니 비교를 통한 다양한 예문을 통해 확인하시죠.

- When I finish school, I plan to go to college. (as a student)

- I went to the college to meet Professor Kim. (as a visitor, not as a student)

- The professor isn't in his office right now. He's in class. (as a professor)

그 밖에 다양한 구절

go to bed / be in bed (not the bed)

ex) I'm going to bed now. Good night!

ex) Do you ever have breakfast in bed?

 

단, 특정한 침대라는 가구 자체를 말할 때는 the를 붙여씁니다.

ex) I sat down on the bed (= a specific piece of furniture)

 

go to work /  be at work / start work / finish work (not the work)

work를 이용한 숙어 표현 시, the를 붙이지 않는 경우입니다. 아래 예문으로 확인하시죠.

ex) Chris didn't go to work yesterday.

ex) Lee usually finishes work at 5:00.

 

go home / come home / arrive home / get home / be (at) home / do something at home

home을 사용할 때, 특정한 집이 아니고서야 보통 the를 앞에 붙이지 않습니다. 왜냐하면 일반적인 기준으로 우리의 집은 하나이기 때문에 당연한 집입니다.

ex) I don't have my phone. I left it at home.

ex) It was a long, tiring trip. We arrived home very late.
